Zombie Defense vs Survivors: Which Is Which

Three games, one studio, one word of difference

All three are by Awesome Games Studio. The names are close enough that Steam’s own search returns all three for most queries, and “yet another zombie defense” remains one of the highest-volume searches made by people who are actually looking for Survivors.

The thing that trips everyone up

The older games have co-op. The new one does not.

This is the single most useful fact on this page, and it explains a search pattern that otherwise makes no sense: co-op and multiplayer are among the fastest-rising queries for Survivors, in a game that has never had either. Players who owned Defense or Defense HD are not misremembering. They played online co-op, with split screen, in this series, from this studio — and then the newest entry shipped without any of it.

The genre moved. Base defence is a natural co-op shape: fixed position, multiple lanes, more hands help. Bullet heaven is not — it is one player against a scaling horde, and the sub-genre is almost entirely single-player. See is it co-op for what the three-survivor squad actually is.

What carries over

Despite the genre change, Survivors is not a reboot. It shares a universe with the Defense games, and 1.0’s story missions concern “the Survivors’ discovery of the source of the virus” — the same apocalypse.

The clearest nod is an achievement. In Survivors there is one called, simply, Yet Another Zombie Defense, and its condition is:

Have at least three different turret type abilities deployed at the same time

Turrets stacked in defensive positions is precisely what the older games were about. The studio built a tribute to its own back catalogue into the Engineer’s kit, and the achievement is how you find it. Which should you buy?

If you want co-op, Defense HD — it is the only one that has it, it supports online and split screen, and it has sat under a dollar in recent Steam pricing.

If you want the 2026 game with nine survivors, five arenas, 229 achievements and a story mode, that is Survivors at $14.99, discounted 35% to $9.74 at launch. There is a free demo on Steam.

Be careful with the search results either way: “Yet Another Zombie Defense HD” has its own long-tail guide traffic, and a fair amount of it is written by people who have not noticed there are three games.
