Potato and Sanji the Rabbit, Explained

Two different things with almost the same name

Searches for “potato” are among the highest-volume queries this game has, in every language it ships in — ziemniaczek in Polish, 감자 in Korean, ジャガイモ in Japanese, kartofel in Russian. Almost all of them collapse into two separate things that share a word:

NameWhat it isHow you get it
PotatoAn itemAppears in the item pool; picking one up fires the achievement “Why’d You Pick That?”
Curly Little PotatoAn achievementAwarded for finding Sanji the Rabbit — no potato required

Getting these two mixed up is the single most common confusion around the game, and it is the studio’s own fault for being funny about it.

What the Potato actually does

The Potato is not purely a gag. Patch notes from 8 January 2024 rebalanced it directly:

Potato now has 1 stack (from 3) and its effect is boosted to 50% (from 15% per stack).

That is the last time the studio published a number for it. Note what this does and does not tell you: it confirms the item was reworked from a three-stack, 15%-per-stack item into a single-stack, 50% item. It does not say what the 50% applies to, and the studio has never published a full item table with stat lines. Anyone quoting you a specific stat for the Potato is either reading the in-game Zombiepedia or making it up. Check the Zombiepedia entry in your own build — it is the live reference, and this page will not invent a number to fill the gap.

What did change recently and is documented: version 1.0 swapped the achievement rewards.

The achievement reward for “Why’d You Pick That?” is now “Great Nade” instead of “Skip Rope”. The achievement reward for “Curly Little Potato” is now “Easter Egg” instead of “Jade Amulet”.

Both Great Nade and Easter Egg are among the 21 items added in 1.0, so the studio moved these two joke achievements onto brand-new rewards at launch. If you unlocked either achievement during Early Access, you got the old item.

Sanji the Rabbit

Sanji is a secret. The achievement reads, in full:

Curly Little Potato — Find Sanji the Rabbit

That is the entire official description. The studio has never published where Sanji appears, under what conditions, or how often, and this page is not going to guess at a spawn rule the developers have deliberately kept quiet.

What can be said honestly:

  • Sanji has been in the game for years. Community hunt videos for this achievement date back to 2023, well before 1.0, and one of them has over eleven thousand views — an unusual amount of attention for a single achievement in a game this size.
  • It survived the 1.0 rework. “Curly Little Potato” is still in the 229-achievement list, and 1.0 changed its reward rather than retiring it.
  • It is not a mission. It sits in the general achievement pool, not in the Story or Survivor Mission categories that 1.0 introduced, so no amount of progressing the story will hand it to you.

If you are hunting it, the community video guides are the practical resource; the in-game Zombiepedia and the achievement list are the authoritative ones. See the full achievement list for the exact wording of every related unlock.

The other animals: Good Boy and Falcon

Since 1.0, potatoes are not the only strange thing in your squad. The 1.0 changelog’s addition list ends with a single word — “Dogs.” — and the Ranger arrived with animal companion abilities named Good Boy and Falcon. Patch 1.0.0b had to reduce how often their sound effects fire, which tells you roughly how present they are in a run.

There is also an achievement, Diggy, Diggy Hole, whose description is just “Help the best boy out, would you?” — the studio’s way of pointing at the dog without explaining anything. Players have been searching for what a “very deep hole” means in this game ever since; the honest answer is that the condition is not documented anywhere official, and the community guides that exist for it are recent and thin.
