What Engineer is for
Engineer is the closest thing this game has to a build the developers explicitly endorse. The achievement Yet Another Zombie Defense asks you to have three different turret types deployed at once — a direct reference to the studio’s older base-defence games, and a signpost pointing at turret stacking. Turret compositions were the most-published squad of the 1.0 launch fortnight, and turrets do their work whether or not your positioning is good, which makes Engineer the most forgiving of the three starters.
Ranks
Every survivor has five ranks, the fifth added in version 1.0 along with two new synergy nodes, two passive improvement nodes, and one passive node that buffs the whole team whenever Engineer is in the squad. Ranks 2 through 5 each have an achievement:
| Rank | Achievement |
|---|---|
| Rank 2 | Trust Me, I’m An Engineer |
| Rank 3 | Fullmetal Engineer |
| Rank 4 | The King Engine |
| Rank 5 | Unreal Engine |
The Survival Level each rank requires has never been published by the studio, and is not guessed at here.
Personal mission chain
Engineer asks for five missions, each its own achievement, and unlocks repeatable quests afterwards. Every one raises Team Bond, the squad-wide bonus to Cash and Specialization Points.
Six Thinking Hats → SWOT Analysis → Heroic Theory → Trial and Error → Brainstorming
The mission chain is business-school frameworks and the rank achievements are game-engine puns, which is a lot of jokes for one character.
Patch history worth knowing
Patch 1.0.0a fixed Ice Turret not registering its damage type as Ice — a launch-week bug that silently broke Ice-damage achievement progress for turret builds.
